The History of Cinema

Watching the cutting edge - the magic of movie editing documentary
with my understanding of the documentary and my own knowledge from reaserch i was able to answear some questions on editing and its history

founding fathers of cinema
i found that the person credited for founding cinema is Louis Lumiere as he was the inventor of the first motion picture camera in 1895 but there is some disagreement with this as in 1891 the edison company successfully demonstrated the kinetoscopewere being the first ever to project film this allowed one person at a time to view moving pictures and then in 1896 edison presented a vitascope projecterwhich had been inproved

Why Edwin S Porter is important
Porter was one of the first to discover editing as a whole he thought by intercutting two shots that weren't from the same place together he could build a story he found that by using this technique he could get his film to be entertaining with much more depth rather than before where films where much more dull with not much of  a story line.

some of Edwin S Porters films
The great train robbery (1903)
Life of an American fireman(1903)
Dream of a rarebit fiend (1906)

The purpose of editing
editing which is cutting and placing different shots and frames together in a sequence to form a film one of its main purposes are it creates a story making a film interesting to watch as well as bingning a feel of tension and other emotions that would not be felt other wise as well as this different effects can be added to shots to inforce the disired effect for example slow down or speed up for example in the film 'The vow' in the car crash scene it is slowed down so that the audience is able to see all that happenes in the shot and nothing is missed as well as show how time has stoped for the people envolved making the audienece feel more connected to the characters as well as thins timing of cuts can startle or amuse audience

The first modern editior was D.W Griffith  (Born January 22 1875 - Died July 23 1948)

Some of D.W Griffiths films
Way down east(1920)
Orphans of the storm (1921)
Dream street (1921)

What did he do that was special or different:
D.W Griffith new very different special techniques he used in his films are what made him unique in his time. Griffith was the first to use a close up in his film before this people were very used to seeing actors whole body in each shot and when he did bing his idea forward as stated in the The cutting edge documentry people found it to be a very starange idea and would rather see actors whole body rather than a close up of their face but after this was put into context in film it began to make sence to many people and dfilm makers and this is how this technique was born. he then went on to also create the flashback which also seemed like a very starange concept at the time but was slowly accepted and as the close up brought a depth of emotion that perviously wasnt available in film.

another one of Griffiths ideas was the invisible cut this is the technique where there is a shot of some one and then there is a cut to a different angle although this is not visible to the viwer as the action is idential to the previous shot this is one of the key techniques used in film as it makes sure that the film is smooth and looks very effortless to the viewer the way in which it works is the the action takes away the attention of the change of shot from the audience and so they do not notice the cut. for example a there is a long shot of a character walking down stairs and there is then a cut to a medium shot and because the action is fitted to match the audience does not take notice to the cut another example is this video where there is first a longshot of the person sitting at a computer this is then cut to a medium shot as he is in the same position and has not moved the change in shot looks very natural and the cut will not be visible to the viewer.

action are aways continuous to achieve a smooth movement that looks natural and real

Task 1

Task 1: Due Wednesday 25th September

Analogue editing
This was the first form of editing introduced before the technology where editors would use a razor blade and a diagonal splicing block to cut the film where needed and then tape it back together this was then repeated until the film was formed. This was the technique used in the very first films the world ever saw for example ‘exiting factory’ which was made in 1895 and if you pay close attention to the black and white film it is clear it has been hand cut. The editors of this time would have been very talented as this was a very time consuming technique that could be only done by a professional who was heavily experienced. The disadvantages to analogue editing is it is very time consuming as well as quite a rough way of putting shots together as it does not look smooth or very professional on screen.

When watching this clip it is clear that it has been analogue edited as there are many jump cuts and it looks quite rough this is because this technique is not very exact and issues like jump cuts can be very common.

Digital editing
Refers to a form of electronic media where the data is stored in a hard disk or computer for example this is the opposite to analogue editing and the next step in the history of editing it means that the editor can simply choose clips and put them in whatever order they want and if any mistake is made it can be fixed very easily compared to analogue it also brings a much smoother result in the end since its invention in 1971 non-linear editing has been welcomed into domestic use too making it easy for anyone to learn the skill of editing. A down side to this form of editing for the film industry is it has a higher production cost.

It is clear this is an example of digital editing as you can see it is very smooth and there is no jump cuts it looks very professional and this is because of the advance in technology

In-camera editing
This is a technique where instead of recording and then editing the clips the film is shot in strict order as it will be presented in the final product so there is no editing in this technique this takes a lot of time and exact planning to work right a benefit to this is the production costs are very low and so it is most commonly used by unprofessional who lack experience in editing.

This is a very good technique to use as it still looks as professional as a digital edit and just as smooth but in the end it has a much better production cost this would be good for students for example.
Following the action
This is usually used in action movies in scenes where there is a lot of movement for example a fighting scene or a car chase when this is recorded there are several cameras recording from different angels as there are many different angles used this is to give more depth so that the viewer feels as if they are in the film and are apart of the action. This was introduced with digital editing and has a much higher production cost this is why it is most commonly used in Hollywood films

this clip shows Mr. and Mrs. smith in the final fight scene this is a good example because it shows a great amount of action in a short period of time transitioning from different angles to bring the viewer in.

Multiple points of view
Viewpoints are used in films so that the audience is able to make a opinion on each character on their own usually if they are evil or good. most filmmakers chose to have the good guy as the star but it is left to the audience to make their own conclusion. A good example where this is used it

a good example of a film that uses this is ‘Coverfield’ as it is recorded on hand held cameras which makes it feel more realistic and make the viewer feel like they know the character more personally.

Shot variation
Different variations of shots are used in recording to create a sequence of images using movement some examples of shot variation can be when there is an alternation of close up from one person to another as they are conversing  and other example is an long shot which gets the viewer to see full view of what’s happening and makes the audience feel more as though they are apart of what’s happening.
This clip shows a great example of different shots as it takes a full turn around the man and shows all angles possible to make the viewer feel as though they see all that is happening

Manipulation of diegetic time and space
This is when a editor changes the speed of the film to show the viewer a long period of time had past in a short time this is used to skip through days, weeks, months even years this is not in real time and is the magic of film although a negative would be that it is not very realistic.

this I a great example instead of showing the whole period of time it took him to train it shows short clips of him improving until he comes to the end of his training.

Montage

I used the crash scene again this time putting it into a montage, in the video i used different techniques to make the montage for example i overlapped two clips over each other to build the story line and create tension for the audience i also learnt to dissolve from one scene to another which gives the viewer an idea of the story line and builds suspense. montage is an editing technique that is used to show different scenes to build a story line that grips the reader and makes them want to see more

Improved clip

to improve this clip i could have shown more of the car crash as this is the key part of the montage and will give the audience a better understanding of the video if they are able to see more than one angle of the crash and this will also create more of an emotional response from in the viewer and this is done by giving the viewer more information for example where they are and who is in the crash this will make the viewer feel more apart of the clip as a whole.

This is a short video i have put together which is inspired by Kuleshovs work where he thought by experimenting with different clips and putting them together to build a montage he could get the viewer to build a storyline and meaning in their heads. I recorded a short clip of myself and the chose different images and placed them after the recording each time repeating the same footage. Montage is now used to get an emotional response from the viewer and to change time and action in a film.

By starting a premier project and editing 6 different video and audio files we were given of a car crash  in a sequence i was able to come up with this video. We also learnt to overlap audio and video over each other to bring continuity to the video and build suspense for the viewer, this was my end result.
To improve on my video i will show the clip of the sheep to give the viewer a clearer idea of the story line so that they feel more involved in the video i will also shorten the beginning clip of the drive as this lasts for too long and isn't very continuos from one clip to another.
