questions for interview radio package

Do you use social media sites on a say to day basis?

I will be asking this question to find out how often they use social media to understand how much of an effect it has on their daily life and if the interview will be relevant to them.

Has social media ever caused conflict between you and someone you know?

Allowing the interviewee to give an anecdote or expand on if social media had effected a relationship of theirs negatively before.

What is your opinion on becoming Facebook official?

I found this is a controversial topic through my research, I believe in asking this I will receive a range of different opinions allowing the interviewee to express their thoughts on the matter.

What’s your opinion on online dating?

This talked about in several articles and in a video I researched and I found many people have different opinions on whether online dating is the right way to go, I feel this question will make my interview interesting as it is not spanning out of the traditional social networking sites

What is the most common reason for conflict on social media?

Once again this will allow my interviewee to give an anecdote and talk about their personal experiences, which will make the piece relatable and grab the audiences attention.

Task Thee – Understanding the techniques of music videos

Use of Chroma key
VIDEO
Here is a video I created employing the chroma key technique using a green screen and filming ourselves in front of it before going online and editing in a background, this makes it possible for a director to build an illusion that an actor is at any location they would like without having to leave the studio.

A example where this technique has been used in music videos is Rihanna’s ‘Rude Boy’ the entire video is filmed in studio behind a screen, the director rather than put a traditional scenery background has employed interesting illustrations and moving images adding a different and out of the box aesthetic to the visuals.

Effects and interesting transitions
Layering shots
This video is an example of effects that are applied in the editing process to give the video more depth this video includes a range of shots that are layered with other shots I feel this makes simple scenes look more complex and maintain audiences attention, I will try and use this in my video.

Some parts of this video have been reversed, I feel utilizing this techniques gives the video an artistic feel as well as makes a piece of normal footage look more different and fitting with the soundtrack, I will try and utilize this in a few of the scenes in my video as I like the aesthetic it produces.
Cut to the beat

These two music videos are a great example of cutting to the beat of the song, LMFAO’s video cuts to a different shot every time there is an “aaah” in the lyric this an different take on the technique, while ‘the white stripes’ video cuts at the beat each time making the visuals and the song run smoothly together and construct a relationship between the two.

Task two - Employing Andrew Goodwin’s theory

Once I researched into Andrew Goodwin I decided to investigate his theory of six key conventions that supposedly should apply to most videos, by analyzing a popular video at the time.

I decided on analyzing the video for ‘Comfort Inn Ending’ by Jhene Aiko an R&B artist. Firstly Goodwin states that most Pop or R&B music videos employ a range of close ups and maintain focus on the artist, to promote the artist and their image to the public. This video is a great example of this, the focus throughout the video is simply on Jhene Aiko even in the ending scene where she is sharing a moment with a male we are unable to see his face at any point and the emphasis stays solely on the artist.

Goodwin theorises that there is more than one type of music video, those that are Disjunctive and present visuals that don’t correlate with the lyrics of the song what so ever and also illustrative videos, where the video directly represents the lyrics. ‘Comfort Inn Ending’ is a great instance of an illustrative video the song focuses on heartbreak and tells the story of a female that has found out she has been cheated and lied to, the video then portrays the visuals of the singer as she reacts to finding out for instance we see her emptying her lovers wardrobe, scratching cars and crying to her friend. Using this technique not only adds depth to the song but also gives the audience a wider understanding of what the artist was trying to portray through her lyrics.

Andrew Goodwin also discusses The Notion of looking where the artist looks straight into the camera almost addressing the audience, although popluar in the R&B genre this in fact is not presented at all in the video, there is no scene where Jhene Aiko is looking into the camera I feel this gives the video a cinematic feel as well as helps produce a piece that seems realistic and gives the view a impression of almost peering into someone’s actual life.

Several scenes throughout the video are in slow motion allowing the audience to focus on small details, the actors are presented arguing and talking although the audience is unable to understand what it is they are saying, the lyrics of the song do the job of giving an understanding of the situation so that the dialogue is not needed, though the video does not follow all the six conventions I found that Goodwin’s theory dose correlate with many different techniques that are used in most of the videos I researched into, and ‘Comfort Inn Ending’ is a good instance of this.
