Purpose of research

Research is key in producing an interview, as you are expected to have a good knowledge of the subject in question. You must also look into your target audience and build an understanding of their interests as this will help you produce an interview that runs smoothly, is effective to the listener and represents the views of the target audience clearly. It is also important that you revise the questions you are going to ask your interviewee and in the order you will be asking them as this will be key in setting the tone of the interview and gaining the information you need, the questions I produce must be clear and relevant. I will be asking questions about how my interviewee uses social networking sites, whether they feel it effects their relationships and interferes with other aspects of day to day life and how? asking how much they use social media is also key in understanding how it effects different ranges of people. it is also key that i research different radio shows that i would like to take inspiration from when creating my own, to help with the style of interview i will be going for and how to communicate to an audience.

This is an example of a radio package which is a primary source of research; as we are able to hear the information directly from the artist themselves without much editing taking place as it is broadcasted live to an audience. It does also show a some secondary too as Katy Perry discusses artist Calvin Harris. Having a primary source in an interview leads to the interview being much more attention grabbing to a listener as it is reliable and can't be contradicted as much as if it was from another source where you can't be sure if what is being said is truth or a rumour. The radio show is broadcasted from 6am to 9am and is a breakfast show this is targeted to towards and audience who either goes to school or work and therefore covers a larger range of age ranges or 16-23 year olds you can also see this by the choice of celebrity to be interviewed. this will be helpful when i start to structure my interviews as i will be focusing on a similar audience and it it inspiring to see what they already tune into currently and what they like listening to. The interview has a relaxed atmosphere and is presented as though it is a discussion this makes the interviewee comfortable, a game is also included where they ask her to sing a christmas song this fits in with the time and makes it different to other interviews she may have done.

Another interview I wil be taking inspiration from is this BBC radio 1 interview which became very popular, i believe this was a successful interview as the interviewer asked a range of open, direct and multiple questions that allowed Kanye too give his opinion on different subject as well as explain himself about different aspects of his career that people may not have know. i take inspiration from the interview because it is relaxed  and casual although he still is able to take all the information he is looking for from the artist.

Assessment 2: Pre Production

The Target audience I would like to address in my radio interview is young people ages 17-20 years old, who are up to date with today’s technology, this is because i feel this subject effects this age range the strongest. I will look into interviewing more than one person with different experiences so that my show is not bias and contains diverse opinions for example people in long term relationships, people not in relationships although have an opinion on the matter and have a linked experience.

As i will be constructing my radio show outside of school i am going to have to use my own material and equipment to record the interviews. the necessary equipment that i will be using to create a successful interview are, a 'Cannon SLR' camera so that i can have footage of the interview which is usually posted on the website of the radio station, as well as a 'Zoom HD audio recorder', this will assure the audio for the piece is consistent throughout and flows.

I will be using the knowledge i have gained in researching interviews to conducting my own interviews, making sure i look presentable and am dressed professionally for the occasion, as well as have good body language so that the interviewee can feel comfortable and feel that you are engaged with the conversation. it is also key that i ask the right types of questions (e.g. direct, multiple, open, closed)  as well as speaking with clarity so that there is no confusion and the interview runs smoothly also so that it is easy to hear in the recording and sound professional.

The questions i will be asking and in what order they are in is key to having an organised interview that reaches the goal I have set to find out a key piece of information. i will do this by planning a script of the questions i am going to ask although should be prepared to also go off script and this is done by doing research and being prepared for the interview. Focusing on what kind of tone i would like my interview to be in is also important because it gives the listener and interviewee an idea of your intentions for the interview and what you would like to get across, I can then word my questions in a way that fits this, so that it is clearly translated to the interviewee and audience.

I will be conducting interviews about social media and the affect it has on our everyday lives and relationships, i will be asking simple open questions so that my interviewee is given a change to give anecdotes and give them a chance to speak their opinion and what they have to say. asking them questions about how they use social media and how it has effected different parts of their lives, have they feel their relationships would be like without it. asking the different ages in my target audience will allow me to get a good range of different opinions on the subject as they will all have different experiences.

When studying interviews i was able to learn the do's and dont's of building a strong interview that translates to the viewer the different opinions, research is key, making sure that you are aware of the subject and recent advances in it as well as have a good knowledge of the audience and people you are questioning and make sure they the right people to be questioning and have a strong opinion on the subject, this will mean you can go off script and have an actual discussion about the subject this will lead to pulling more personal information from the interviewee as they become more comfortable with you. The order you chose to ask questions also effects the way the interview is carried out for example if you want the interviewee to feel comfortable and want a light hearted interview starting off with a easy question and then gradually getting to more important and difficult to answer questions will ease the interviewee in and make them feel comfortable in telling you more personal information.

As i have a great deal of organisation and research in interviews the amount of set backs will be small, although there are some factors that could effect my interviewing process, for example if the people i was going to interview are unavailable in time for the interview, to make sure this doesn't happen i will make sure i have a guaranteed time when i can go and interview them and they have agreed to this.

Researching into the context I will be exploring in my interview package, which is Social media and its effects on relationships I was able to conduct primary and secondary research through a survey, which I produced on ‘Survey monkey’, and articles I found online from trusted sources, which provided me with statistics and factual information on the matter.

Once I produced a questionnaire on Online relationships asking questions about how my target audience of 16-18 used social media, as well as their opinion on dating sites and social media in connection to relationships. I then put my findings into tables so that I could clearly see what the public thought about the matter, this would then help me to build up suitable questions that will give me interesting and detailed answers that will maintain the audiences attention. I was also able to see if the radio stations target audience was fitting to my topic and was something that they would tune in to.
Here I was able to find what social media sites my audience regularly used giving me knowledge on what to discuss in interviews that they will find relevant.

planning working towards choosing your idea

The Target audience I would like to address in my radio interview is young people who are up to date with today’s technology, I will look into interviewing more than one person in different positions so that my show is not bias and contains different opinions for example people in long term relationships, people not in relationships although have an opinion on the matter and have a linked experience.

Identify the range of resources and materials available to you. To create this interview I will select a range of people I know to interview about the subject and choose the interviews in which the person has the strongest opinion and is clearest about what they think and include these in my show. Planning the questions I will be asking and in what order is key to having an organized interview that reaches the goal I have set to find out a key piece of information. Focusing on what kind of tone you would like your interview to be in is also important as you can then word your questions in a way that fits this, so that it is clearly translated to the interviewee and audience.

When it comes to interviewing research is key, making sure that you are aware of the subject and recent advances in it as well as have a good knowledge of the audience and people you are questioning this will mean you can go off script and have an actual discussion about the subject that isn’t planned this will mean you are able to pull more personal information from the interviewee as they become more comfortable with you.The order you chose to ask questions also effects the way the interview is carried out for example if you want the interviewee to feel comfortable and want a light hearted interview starting off with a easy question and then gradually getting to more important and difficult to answer questions will ease the interviewee in and make them feel comfortable in telling you more personal information although if you are going for a interview tone which is tough starting with a difficult question will let them know what the interview will be like and will set the atmosphere for the rest of the questions letting them know that the interview will be serious and you intend on getting answers.
