The short films begins with a establishing shot of a
building in a form of a picture on a purple wall, this image suggest that it is
a work place as there are many cars and the building is of a large size. It
then immediately switches to a close up shot of a woman with shallow focus so
all the viewer’s attention is kept on the woman this suggests that she will
play a key role in the film, although the surroundings of the woman are not
clear the lighting in the background and the movement of people shows that she
is at a work place to go with this there is green lighting reflecting on her
face suggesting to the viewer that she is working on a photocopying machine.
When focusing on the main character it is clear that she is a very neat and
tidy person as her hair is up and her buttons are all done up this also may
suggest that she may quite a boring and dull person as well as this she has a
pin clip in her hair and this shows that she may be quite naive and innocent.
As she shows very little facial expression this confirms to the viewers idea
that she is at work and this is routine for her and maybe not something she
enjoys. Followed by this shot is a bird’s eye view shot of her photocopying
this fits with the green lighting that was previously reflection on her face
crabbing is used here and the camera moves past the machine she is working on
and onto another machine where you then she a males hand doing the same task.
The next shot after this is a medium long shot of the two people we have just
been introduced to doing their job in a very synchronised form as they are
doing all the same actions in the same timing suggesting to the viewer how much
they ay have in common or how similar they are to each other. Both booths that
they are in are very similar for starters the walls are both purple this colour
could suggest passion and love and may be a suggestion to the viewer that this
is upcoming in the film, although other objects aren’t exactly positioned in
the same place in each booth the similarities are very close and this may be a
reflection into the two people and their similarities with each other in this
shot we are also much more able to see a clearer mage of the costumes in the
film and we see the female wearing pink tights this may suggest to the viewer that
love is approaching as this is a colour with connotations to love. The camera
then switches to an over the shoulder shot where the viewer is first introduced
to the males face they take a glance at each other which suggest that they may
be acquaintances but they look away without communication and as there is a
wall in between them separating to separate the booths show the viewer that
they are not close and that they
still are strangers in reality, the woman’s face shows disappointment as the
shot goes into shallow focus which suggests to the viewer that they don’t
actually know each other as well as this the children’s clip in her hair is
brought into the viewers focus as it is the brightest object in the shot this
may suggest that she is quite shy when it comes to communicating with him and
is afraid and not very experienced. Moving on from this shot the viewer is
introduced to a new location in the offices as the camera takes it place on an
office desk, the male walks into frame casually and his surroundings now make
it clear to the audience that this scene is being filmed in offices as there
are computers and desks placed around the room around him and you are also able
to see his colleagues around him in their wok place. When he sits on his desk
we then see a medium shot of him sat down and see his reaction to what he sees
on his desk, he then opens it and for a few seconds the viewer s only able to
view his reaction and is still not able to see what he is looking at the camera
then switches to a birds eye view shot and we see what he has been looking at
in a eye line match form, there then is a side shot of him looking down on the
paper and this is a matching on action to the previous scene the director has
intentionally in this case left a large amount of space over his head in the
shot as when the character moves back the camera moves with him in crabbing throughout this short film these different shots fit well looking very smooth and effort the positioning of the camera means the audience is able to view all the different things happening and get everything in shot.

Format
Format
A format is made up of a combination of the different characteristics of a product weather it is a film, series, feature film, short film or a single drama. this is decided through its length, genre, content, narrative and many more different aspects that make up the format. this then effects the way in which they are presented on television and lets the viewer know the type of viewing experience it has to offer below are some examples of the different formats filmed with a single camera.Doctor Who- Series
This is an example of a series format using single camera production as the series is a sc-ifi drama most scenes are all filmed in the same place meaning there is no need for more than one camera to film, although scenes with fast action are filmed with more than one camera to speed up production and so that you are able to view the action form different angles. a series means it is shown for a set amount of time each week and is continuing from the last series each time with one storyline running through.
Feature film
A short film is a film that last a short amount of time, it is usually a linear film showing a start to end of the story line throughout the ilm we are introduced to characters and that set of characters are they kept throughout the film building the storyline. the story lines are built by one event leading to another just like a normal ilm only difference being the timing and more information being fit into a very short period of time.
An example of a short film is 'candy crime' which was awarded best short film it is directed by Ben Jacobson and lasts 1 minute and 30 seconds. it is aimed at a teenage audience and set at a bus stop focusing on a group of teens and a little girl
feature film also known as motion picture can be linear or non-linear depending on the movie. It is a film which lasts a long period of time some lasting up to 3 hours and throughout this set time shows the whole plot from beginning to end. It contains a set of characters that are in the film through out and usually don't change, the films storyline is then built by following the characters and the events that occur to them and each event that happens then leads to another event. and example of a feature film is 'fight club' a movie based in the genre of drama following two main characters which very different ways of life as they cross paths and end up living together and forming an underground fight club. the film is 139 minuets long and was produced in 1999 the main characters include Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter

Single drama
a single drama is only show once and is often a presentation of real life issues and topics. it is more suitable for television then cinema because of the because of the types of things that are looked into.
one example of a single drama is the murder which is baed on actual events it aired for 1hour on the release date of Tuesday 17th April 2012 the main character in this single drama was Shakilus Townsend

task 1
Narrative
The simplest form of telling a story in a movie is called sequential narrative this means that the order in which the viewer sees the events happening are ‘’real’’ time so there is no interruption ,
extension or any change made to the clip and the audience views the scene from start to finish as it has been shot. This could also mean that the film has been filmed from start to finish in order
and there are no jumps back to the past or future during the film. This kind of narrative is common in films although can be seen as boring in some cases and can cause loss of attention from the viewer.
One example of a film that uses linear narrative is ’High Noon’ this is a piece of old cinema and shows a great example of sequential narrative, during the film there is a scene in which the characters have
a traditional cowboy fight during this scene we are frequently reminded of what time it is as there are shots of clocks often this makes the viewer aware of the timing in the film and makes it much more
realistic for the audience when watching. Another example I have chosen for this narrative is
Non-linear narrative on the other hand is where events are portrayed in film in a non-chronological order so the narrative and what the audience is viewing is not in real time timing and may skip
unnecessary points to keep the viewers’ attention as well as this shots can be speeded up, slowed down, or repeated in this form of narration making it much less realistic but easier to watch for the viewer,
one great example of this form of narrative would be (500) Days of Summer where the main character looks back on a failed relationship we are also frequently reminded of the day off all the events
in the film and this shows the viewer that everything is not happening in real time but rather is being cut into key information of the memories and time they spent together another positive aspect of this is
that during the film the audience is unaware that the film is not being set in the present and this brings an element of surprise for the viewer keeping their interest throughout the film. Another example of
non-linear narrative is ‘slumdog millionaire’ where throughout the film the viewer is shown snippets of the main characters childhood to inform them on how the character came to be in the situation he is
currently in this is very effective and brings an emotional attachment on the viewer with the characters as they see them grow throughout the film making the audience feel connected to the protagonist.
Flashbacks are points narrative storyline where the film goes back in time to show events that have happened in the past these can be shown in a range of different ways and are commonly introduced
to the viewer with a bright light or zooming into a characters face although this is not necessary although this is unrealistic and cannot be used in linear film using flash backs means the audience
has a lot more information on the characters in the film making it much less confusing and easy to understand for viewers and also is a less time consuming way of giving the viewer a large
amount of information , one example of flashbacks being used in film is ’Breaking Dawn Part 2’ where the viewer is shown a flashback of the couple’s relationship up until that point in the film
this brings the viewer in and makes them feel as though they are a part of the film as well as inform they of any key information they may have missed or not be aware of, the flashback is introduced
with a close up of one characters face in the present time being merged with the others in the past making the flashback look much more natural and fitting for the romantic setting, another example
of a flashback being used in film is in ‘The Avengers - Captain America’ in this flashback scene different to a traditional flashback scene commonly used in film this flashback goes back and forth
from present and past events this makes the scene much more tense with fast switching shots it I very fitting to its violent scenes.
Realist narrative are story lines that are believable to the audience because they appear real or because they are based on actual events this can be shown throgh a range of diferent techniques
for example hand held camera this makes the viewer feel more emotionaly conected to the evants and charcters in the film and also see themselves in the position of the characters
one example of this is in 'cornfield' in this action film the hand held camera techniques make the veiwers focus on the movements of the camera and what it focuses on more than
usual when viewing other films this brings out a range of much stonger emotion in the viewer and makes them feel as though they are present in the events of the film. another example of this
type of film would be 'the inbetweeners' the characters in this are built so that the audience finds things in common with them and so find the hummor much more funny and feel connected to
the characters and their stuggles.
non-reaslist is the oposite of this where the narrative is made clearly unrealistic and is less about the viewer getting emotionaly attached but more of a escpe from reality tyoe of film where the
film plays with the audiences imagination the best known example of this is 'star wars' everything from the setting to the costumes and characters this is a more light hearted type of viewing experience
and is much easier for the audience to watch.

Most significant developments in editing history?
Task 3- Due Wednesday 9th October
Over this
unit we have looked at the history of editing form the very beginning where all
was done by hand to the future of editing where technology holds the key role
of successful editing. We have also looked at different editing methods and how
they affect the viewer and the viewing experience overall from this I have been
able to reach an opinion on which has had the biggest effect in the history of
editing.
the most
significant change in the history of editing, would be the transition between
digital and analogue editing as it was the biggest step forward the industry
had ever taken and improved films to a great extent it not only made the job
easier for editors as nothing had to be done by hand and everything was put
onto a hard disc or computer making it easily accessible and also very easy to
assemble into a great smooth edit but also made the editing look much more
seamless improving the overall look of the movie and the viewing experience
digital editing means the viewer is able to feel emotion and build relation
with the actors because of how realistic its final result is this would not be possible
in the past with analogue editing.
Digital
editing is now the technique used in all films made and the advance in
technology means that the skill of editing is easier and much more people can
be taught even in the comfort of their own home with practice take this video
for instance from YouTube teaching people with little to no experience with
video editing the simple skills needed to edit a video for example cut out parts
they don’t want without professional help or spending any money which would
have been very difficult with analogue technology.
Although digital editing has a large amount of
positive aspects it also has its down
sides it has a higher production cost and so makes it much more difficult for
film makers that aren’t in Hollywood to get a great edit as it can be too
costly for an independent movie to hire a professional editor aside from this
another disadvantage is that because digital editing consists fully on storing
all the cuts onto a computer which is then picked apart by the editor and out
into an order which makes sense for the viewer there are chances of the
computer crashing which can waste a lot of time when editing another problem
could be material being lost which can result to a lot of time and money being
wasted and even the film being unfinished which can be very difficult for the director
that has worked hard to film it.
In this
example of digital editing the technique makes it possible for the editor to
achieve fast shots following the tennis ball that would not have been easy or
even possible with analogue editing in the past it also allows the editor to
produce a smooth finish with no jump cuts which was a very hard skill in the
beginning of editing this is a great step forward in the history of editing and
was a key point in the future of film.
There are some positives to analogue editing for instance sound has a more natural and warm feel with a hypothetically better audio bandwidth and is much easier to keep safe and to avoid loss of part of a film as it is a physical thing rather than being saved onto a computer which is easier to lose and get deleted. Although disadvantages are much greater for example from the range of cheaper recorders there can be a problem with distortion and hissing noises coming from the tape as well as this the tape must be wound or rewound at the location of the recording to be heard which is very impractical other impractical issues is that tapes very hard to source as no one uses them any longer and lastly it is increasingly difficult to synchronise video with unlike with digital where it Is a much easier skill.
Edwin s porter is thought to be one of the first editors to experiment with film editing in the way that he did for example ‘the great train robbery’ was the first example of dynamic, action editing the world had seen putting different shots at different times and places for emotional impact that was unavailable in a static long shot. As he was one of the first film directors and editors he utilized invented some of the first visual effects.
Eadweard Muybridge was also key in film history and used a group of shots of a horse running at a steady speed and then made this look like an on-going motion of the horse moving and the camera following it as it does and as shown in this image it is clear how he placed the different shots together to form the edit this then had a benefit on film makers as it shows how he did it and encouraged people to gain interest in the craft
