3C-The law and regulators

Race Relations Act 1976
the Race relations Act was formed by the parliament of the United Kingdom to keep people from having to experience racial discrimination, the Act prevents people being prejudice on the grounds of colour, nationality, race, ethnic and national origin this allows people with all sorts of different backgrounds live in the UK and feel welcome by the country and their people for who they are.
This act is then connected to the TV and film industry in many ways for instance for a film or show to be shown to the public on TV or in a cinema it must be made sure firstly that there is no content that is going against the act which would mean viewers feeling as though you are being prejudice against peoples colour, nationality, race, ethnic and national origin and this could then lead the film or show being banned from being shown again if it gets shown as well as the broadcasting company being prosecuted for showing it.
this is an important law for the TV and film industry to follow, it makes a better living environment for people in the UK and also means people are treated fairly in all aspects of life and feel welcome. This in the TV and film aspects it stops people from having to view something that will make them feel un equal or unwelcome following this law also means that the broadcaster or film maker is able to reach a much larger audience of people with different backgrounds

Broadcasting Act 1990
The Broadcasting act was also formed by the parliament of the United kingdom, it was formed to build legal framework on the electronic communication meaning they would have a formal structure so that both television and radio have to follow set regulations for example not showing anything illegal on their programs.
This act relates to the TV and film industry because they must follow the regulations to make sure that they do not show anything that goes against the act and that will not be acceptable for their audience. If they don't follow the rules that have been set there will be some sort of prosecution against those that have shown it weather it is a broadcaster or a filmmaker.Without the broadcasting act and the set framework to follow most electronic communications (TV and radio) would not follow the rules and regulations before airing or take any of these things into consideration before airing a programme as they do now.
This is an important law as it gives a framework to the TV and radio broadcasters so that they are aware if what is acceptable and what will offend viewers and mean less views, this act stops the media from going over the line with what they show and going against any regulations. without with act many programmes would be aired that people would find offending and this would then result to complaints and less and less viewers.

 Obscene Publications Act 1959
This act was formed by England and Wales in 1959. It determines what is elegable to be shown in different types of communication throughout Britain and what isnt for example what shows can be shown on different channels this makes sure that all shows contents donr have anything that wont be acceptable and suitable that will be going against the rules of the act. the act is important in both the film and tv industy as it is what alows differnet stories and information to be shown, however it is found that a broadcaster or film maker is going against the rules they are able to make a decision in weather they should be alowed to still show it to an audience. It makes sure the public is able to have a comfortable viewing experience  it also makes sure that particular information that is not allowed to be shown to the public because it is information to do with the army or as messages and images that can be upsetting and distressing to the viewer and so is against the rules to be shown is not shown and actions are made if it is.

British Board of Film classification
This company has a large rage of viewers who watch a range of different T.V and films they give out age certificates to determine what viewers they are suitable for, the ‘BBFC’ have come together to make sure that younger people do not have to view something that is not suitable and as a result are protecting them from seeing anything their parents may not want them to see for example, violence and scenes of sex in movies their main aims as a company are to protect children and preserve their innocence, as well as empower the viewer for making the choice they have made. This company is key in the UKs film and TV industry as they make sure that all viewers are aware of what they will be getting into when viewing the show or film they are about to view it gives them a brief idea of the kind of scenes that will be shown, several different things have to be looked into before a show or film can be shown to the public for example the amount of violence, weapons or sex scenes shown have to be detected and also announced at the beginning of the show or film so that they audience is aware. The high certificate is also there to make sure that no young viewer is able to watch it as it may be distressing for them.

Ofcom
Ofcom is a communications regulator, specialising in adverts for television, film, radio and postal services they make the decisions on weather adverts are suitable to show the public this decision is made by the board make up of non-executive chairman,non-executive directors, chief executive and executive directors although this is just one stage of a many that an advert must go through before it can be shown to the public

Ofcom deal with complaints in a very precise may and want to make sure that all members of the public that want to complain about an advert feel they are bing listened to and something is being done about their issue, on there website you are able to see what complaints have been made and what has been done by Ofcom as a result. There are two steps to complaining about and advert to Ofcom at first you must read into their guidelines which tell you how to complain so that you are prepared then you can email someone who works in the organisation informing of what you think is wrong with the advert and giving all your reasoning for the complaint they will then look into your complaint, if nothing comes of your complaint and you are still very unhappy with the advert you can call in and speak to a member of the organisation this way you can get your point across in the clearest form, if this also is unsuccessful and you see no improvement and you believe your complaint is very valid then you can get in contact with the secretary of the organisation and they will tell you if anything can be done with your complaint
