4 - How has technology in TV and Film changed and what has been the impact of these changes for audiences and producers of film and TV?

Throughout the years technology in film and TV has changed drastically and improved in all areas, it has means that people are able to access content much more easily as well as made content more advanced and meant that different things are being able to be produced that may not have been possible in the past.

Since 2000 the world of cinema has advanced in a range of different ways, 3D film was first introduced in 1953 although the publics reaction was not very positive and it then took many years for 3D to be officially  reintroduced in 2004 although it had improved it still didn't have every positive reviews, since this point filmmakers began to invest much more time into 3D and making films that are focused on this and improving the viewing experience this lead to advancement in technology an example of  this improvement in technology is the movie 'Avatar' released in 2009 this sparked interest for 3d film and lead to more films being produced in 3d around the world, this is also shown in the graph we can now see that from 2009 the number of films being shown has grown rapidly and is only rising every year. The graph is a clear representation of how much the release of avatar has effected the market there is a huge rise in the amount of films being produced in 3d as the film build a huge hype around the concept of 3d.

As interest in the TV and film industry grew over the years it also expanded in many ways making it a key part of peoples everyday life. For instance more TV shows are being produced that target a certain audience this builds up a fan base or group of people that continue to watch the shows or film and this makes more publicity for the series of film as there is a large group of people who are interested in it and follow it. for example 'Pretty Little Liars' is a television series that has a huge fan base in the US and UK that are loyal viewers there is a website where these viewers are able to communicate with each other and see sneak peeks of the next series this encourages viewers to talk about the show more (http://prettylittleliars.alloyentertainment.com) positive aspects for the audience as they are then able to communicate to others about the show or film they are passionate about and also make friends with people that share the same interest and talk about the show and their thoughts on it, although a negative aspect of a fan base is when the show comes to an end or a character is killed off this can cause disappointment and this could mean that the producer is unable to do everything that he would like to show in his series in fear of how the fan base may react.

As the T.V and film industry technology has advanced there have been a range of positive and negative factors that have changed the way we view TV and film in a huge way. the first advancement that occurred was the change form analogue editing to digital editing this means that after filming is finished footage can be sent to an editing room where it is cleaned up and any special effects can also be added, editing is mostly done manually by the editor they cut the scenes where they need to end making a smooth transition between the two scenes, the advance in editing technology means editing is now all done on a computer
making it much more simple to master. the advance in home viewing has also effected the way in which people view tv and film and the amount of people who chose to view film at home as we have now been introduced to high definition TV, this was invented to create clear, in-depth images in the comfort of the home and was a huge step for the home cinema. Another major change that has come with the advancement of technology is how much cheaper and faster it is to create a film. this is because we have been introduced to cheaper equipment for example cameras that have the ability to film in a great quality. before this advance in technology cameras where much more expensive and editing was not computerised so everything had to be done by hand this meant much more time was needed. an example of this is 'Coverfield' this film was filmed with a hand held camera by students.

Internet has become a large factor in both the TV and film industry, there are now releases of Web series which are only available on the internet an example of this is 'Awkward black girl' which is only available on youtube, these shows are able to gain a large audience that come back for each episode this means more creative people are able to put their work out to the public and don't have to go through all the difficult procedures of trying to gain a show on TV this helps them show their worth and individuality which could then lead to having a job in the business as they will then come with an interested audience. As well as TV series film makers are able to show their short films on the internet for example 'that day after everyday' which is a short film which was presented on youtube through this filmmakers are able to create interest from the public it makes their work much more accessible and means anyone is able to produce a short film or show and have it shown to the public if it interests them. A website that is commonly used for this is youtube which has now become a platform for people who are interested in creating content and putting it out to the public for feedback through this they are able to build a audience as well as show what they are capable of. This means that the public has a much larger range of things they are able to view and this results to people being much more open to people with less experience, producers can then post things on the internet before fully putting it out to the public to see if it will build interest and if it will work.

Another part of the internet which has become connected to both TV and film is websites like netflix and Lovefilm make it possible for people to legally view films and tv shows through the internet by paying a monthly fee or a fee per film, this has become a way of stopping illegal viewing on the internet as it is much easier to access film and tv shows wherever you are, as well as this it means less people feel the need to visit movie theaters as everything is available in the comfort of their own home although it doesn't decrease cinema customers all together as the films available in theaters will not be available online right away it does mean that less people will bother to go out to watch a movie on the other hand it is a positive aspect as producers get their percentage and their movies are watched much more often but it means that there is a wider range of places people are able to go to get the shows and films they want to view.

Mobile phones and iPads have become a new platform to watching TV and film this means people are able to view content much more easily wherever they may be and making viewing easier for an audience means it is much more involved in their everyday life, people are able to watch shows on the way to work, in the park wherever they want and this would not have been even imaginable a few year back. being able to view on your mobile phone means people are able to then also share their new favourite shows or films with their friends they can send each other links as well as talk about them on their social sites which most people are very up to date with

The advance in technology has meant that motion capture can be used to make films that would have never been possible in the past. motion capture is the recording of an object or person this is used in military, entertainment, sports and medicine. in film making, it is used to translate the movement of a person onto a screen making a character that is animated but looks very life like. the new advancements have meant that the facial expressions of an actor can also be recorded and this was very difficult to do in the past as the technology was not yet at that stage, a camera is placed very close to the actors face at all times and this is able to capture all the facial expressions of the actor at all times no matter what they are doing this captures the movement of the face as well as eyes. This technology was used in 'Avatar' and this brought a lot of excitement at the time of its release as it hadn't been seen before.

The another improvement in the technology used in making Film is the special effects this makes it possible for films to have effects that cant be achieved by normal means (real life filming) for example traveling to another planet, the computer technology has made it possible for different film ideas that other wise would look very unrealistic look believable  to the viewer. special effects are often invisible to the viewer as the technology has brought it to a very realistic level for example architecture in the background of a scene audiences don't notice that this is not actually real and this enhances the viewing experience and means the film maker can be open to any idea for a film because it has been made possible now.
