Section 1 : Purpose of interviews

There is a large range of reasons why media media personalities conduct interviews, as there is a huge different range of people who are interviewed that are focused on different careers for example entertainment, political and also non famous . this leads to a great amount of interviews on different subjects in both informal and formal tones.

The first style of interview I looked into was entertainment. in this example of a British TV show called 'Alan Carr Chatty Man', pop celebrity Ariana Grande is being interviewed by the host of the show which is Alan Carr. This interview consists of talking about the musicians personal life and career, giving the audience and fans an insight into her life and information about whats new in here career. The interviewer begins the interview with asking what drink she would like from his assortment of cheap drinks which lightens the mood and provides comedy for an audience as well as set a relaxed and comfortable mood for both interviewee and interviewer. A key reason why musicians or other celebrities in the public eye usually come onto talk shows is to promote an album or product they are releasing through this they both advertise the product and get people talking about them allowing what they are showing to gain more sales and views and gain fans from the audience that watches the talk show. Comparing this interview with the points I gained form 'The art of interview' podcast is that it shows a range of positive aspects that I collected and notice that many talk show hosts use to gain and create a successful interview that benefits both him and his audience as well as the interviewee. Allan Carr is very professional and it is clear he has a set of questions he is going to ask Ariana Grande, he has been written and has gone through a script on the questions and jokes that he is going to be using with his guest, which will also go through the management of the quest. This helps the section run smoothly. The media for this entertainment interview was distributed on Channel 4 on the 5th of November 2013. It can then be viewed on online websites like YouTube and Vimeo or Channel 4's website.

Another style of interview, is an emotional interview. This is when someone is being interviewed as a result of an event that is upsetting and effected the interviewee and the audience watching. The interviewer will try and get an insight into the person and how the feel about the events. In this interview, aired on the Dr. Phil which can be watched online on YouTube or
Vimeo. Dr. Phil is interviewing a young woman who was involved in the death of her mother and two brothers, as this is a subject that is very hard to understand, the interviewer is asking her detailed questions about the events in a bid to find out just what occurred and why. This is a very light-hearted interview because they are talking to someone who  is sharing a story that is difficult for them to repeat. Because they are there to explain, open questions will be asked to the interviewee. 'How did you feel when you saw them lying there?' This is allowing an audience to have an insight into the situation as well as others to see and use this information to raise awareness or start a companion bate on their story. The main median for this story is online mostly seen my Dr Phil's main YouTube Channel. Comparing it to the Podcast they also sowed aspects of a good interview by interviewing someone that has direct involvement with the issue instead of someone who is related or has only heard information form people involved.  The interview is serious to fit with the situation as well as the environment as they are in prison. Another tip that is shown from the podcast are the interviewer is strongly prepared and has a range of files and images to show to the interviewee this shows that he knows what he's talking about and has studied the case before hand. he also repeatedly asks questions if he does not like the answer he is given, by showing images he tries to break her hard exterior and open up.

Another style of interview is an informational interview. This interview I will be explaining in the Russell Brand interview with Paxman which is shown on 'BBC news night'. I believe that this interview is a hard political interview due to the heated answers that Russell Brand is giving to the questions being asked. This interview shown Paxman asking many open questions, which allows Russell Brand to explain in detail is believes and opinions on politics. Many would say this interview is also light hearted even though their topic is seen as serious highlighted by the body language given by Paxman being very causal and laid back when talking and asking his questions, which is unusual compared to the other political arguments and sections he has appeared on.  There are many reasons why they conduct informational interviews, the main reason is to explain and give out information to an audience watching. For this example they are giving out the details of Russell Brands political article 'We no longer have the luxury of tradition' in the magazine 'NewsStatesMan' and also his views on politics and the government today. This helps him promote his article as well as trying to get an audience to understand why he has his certain views and trying to get others to follow his views. The medium that this interview would first be placed on would be on 'BBC news night', it could then be streamed onto different online sites like YouTube,Vimeo and the BBC website, listening to the 'The art of the interview' I noticed some of the points that were explained in the Podcast I have spotted in the Paxman interview, for example Paxman uses the rule of three, asking a direct question three times so the interviewee gets frustrated and answers the question in annoyance. 'Why don't you vote', which is the question that Paxman used in his rule of three.
